Libraries

This section provides links to the principal research libraries in Australia, and includes both university and public collections. This section also contains links to selected digital libraries.

 The Australian University Library Website provides a list, with links, to all Australian university libraries, several of which hold manuscripts and/or incunabula, as well as microfilms of medieval works.

 The University of Melbourne’s catalogue of Medieval Manuscript Facsimiles provides information on 250 facsimile copies of medieval manuscripts held in the university’s Rare Books and Special Collections departments.

 The Australian Libraries Gateway is a portal to the websites of all public libraries in Australia.

 Trove is a catalogue from which one can search the print, manuscript, picture, newspaper, and music collections of all public, university, and many institutional libraries in Australia simultaneously.

This guide identifies the principal microfilmed collections of medieval English manuscripts held by Australian libraries. The guide refers only to those microfilmed manuscripts which are part of a published microform collection.

 National Library of Australia (NLA):

• The general catalogue provides information on materials from across the library’s collections, including some of its manuscripts (although the finding aids for some manuscripts have been digitised and added to this catalogue, this process has not yet been completed).
• The Manuscript room site provides information on the Manuscript Department at the NLA. Although this section of the library holds more than 11 000 manuscript collections, medieval manuscripts form a very modest part of the entire collection (see also 3.3 Digital libraries in Australia).

 State Library of New South Wales :
Catalogue of Manuscripts, Oral History, and Pictures. Although most of this library’s manuscripts date from the seventeenth century onwards, one can find at least a dozen medieval manuscripts, including some handsome French and Flemish books of hours from the fifteenth century.

Similar to the State Library of New South Wales above, most of the Victorian State Library’s manuscript collection dates from after 1600. However, the library possesses several books of hours among its modest medieval collection.

This link guides readers towards a catalogue of university theses. From here, one can access the digitised text of these dissertations.

 The National Library of Australia’s Collection of digitised manuscripts offers links to digitised extracts from more than 8 800 manuscripts, and includes several items from the Middle Ages and early modern period.

The following books are perhaps the most invaluable printed catalogues of medieval manuscripts held in collections across Australia.
