The story of this collection is complex.Part of the books came from the Stamperia Medicea, founded in Rome by the cardinal Ferdinando de Medici in 1584 and then transferred to Florence, at the Laurenziana in 1771 (manuscripts shelfmarked « Palat. Or. »). They were described by Assemani in 1742, in a catalogue containing numerous errors.
The rest of the resource is very diverse. It is composed of manuscripts that came from the Ethiopian community in Jerusalem (Or. 70, Or. 148), the Dominican convent of Florence (S. Marco 741), or donations and acquisitions from the 1800’s (shelfmarked Acq. e doni). Amongst these manuscripts, the author of the catalogue, Paolo Marrassini, emphasizes the oldest copy to be known, at least in Europe, of the collection of pseudo-apostolic canonical texts called Senodos, dating from 1426 (Or. 148), the Epistles of Saint Paul (Or. 70, 16th century), the Apocalypse of Saint John (Gaddi 230, 15th century), as well as an Ethiopian composition that remains unknown till present, entitled the Book of the Sun (Acq. e doni 306, 17th century). Worth noticing is also the Ethiopian text of the letter to the Pope Eugene IV, by the Ethiopian priests of Jerusalem (documenti del concilio 17).

tél : 055 24919 280Elle conserve 6 manuscrits éthiopiens (appartenant au fonds Magliabechiano, noté Magl.) et deux manuscrits relatifs aux premiers contacts entre l’Europe moderne et l’Éthiopie.
Les manuscrits éthiopiens Magl. III 1, Magl. III 2, Magl. III 3, Magl. III 4, Magl. III 83 sont des copies effectuées en Europe et en Égypte (au Caire et au monastère éthiopien de al-Muharraqah près de Coscam) entre 1660 et 1666 pour J. M. Wansleben (1636-1679), orientaliste, élève de Hiob Ludolf.
Le manuscrit Magl. III.2 est un Senodos copié par Wansleben à partir de l’Or. 148 aujourd’hui conservé à la Biblioteca Laurenziana de Florence et du VBGT 2 du monastère San Stefano dei Mori à Rome, aujourd’hui conservé à la bibliothèque vaticane.
Enrico Cerulli a mis en évidence l’importance du manuscrit Magl. III 83, un Livre des Miracles de Marie, formé de deux recueils différents : le premier, composé de 16 miracles, fut copié au Caire, tandis que le second, composé de 28 miracles, fut copié à Coscam.
Un manuscrit éthiopien n’a pas été décrit dans le récent catalogue d’Alessandro Bausi, qui a travaillé sur le corpus des textes copiés par Wansleben. Il s’agit du manuscrit N.A. 771 (Nuovi Acquisti), un psautier du XVIIIe siècle.Les deux manuscrits relatifs aux contacts entre l’Europe et l’Éthiopie (Magl. XIII 84 et II.IV.109) ont fait l’objet de publication :
