Societies and associations

  • Annick GAGNE, Kouky FIANU, Kristin BOURASSA, 7 March 2017

Canadian medievalists often belong to a variety of European or American institutions (such as the Medieval Academy of America or the Société des Historiens Médiévistes de l’Enseignement Supérieur Public, for example). Since the 1980s, several groups have emerged within Canada, facilitating the exchange of information and meetings between scholars scattered across the country, as well as the promotion of common interests.

    - The Société des médiévistes canadiens / Canadian Society of Medievalists is a cross-Canada bilingual association dating to the early 1990s. It publishes an annual journal, Florilegium, and organizes a yearly 3-day conference within the framework of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The CSM awards a yearly PhD thesis prize, book prize, and student presentation prize.

    - The Société des médiévistes du Québec (SEMQ) has represented medievalists in Quebec since 1985. It publishes an annual journal, Memini –Travaux et documents and holds an annual conference targeted at graduate students.

    - The Atlantic Mediaeval Association was founded in 2007. It brings together medievalists based in the maritime provinces of Canada and New England, and holds an annual conference.
