 XIII^e siècle

• Ormulum (extraits et commentaires), CME, éd. R. M. White, 1878.

  L’Ormulum, composé au XII^e siècle par un certain Orm, est une traduction accompagnée de commentaires de versets de l’Évangile ordonnés selon la chronologie de la vie du Christ. Son originalité tient à ce qu’Orm a essayé de rendre le langage anglais lisible par tous, en transposant à l’écrit toutes les nuances de l’oral, de manière unifiée (avec par exemple un système de doubles consonnes permettant de prononcer correctement les mots). Mais le texte a souvent été négligé, à cause de sa difficulté.
