La collection contient des manuscrits occidentaux et orientaux anciens, médiévaux et de la Renaissance. La collection inclut aussi un rouleau généalogique, une rouleau de "Frankpledge" et 2 documents juridiques du XVI^e et du XVII^e siècle. La bibliothèque théologique Pitts contient plus de 3000 ouvrages et quelques manuscrits rares documentant l’histoire de la Réforme protestante en Allemagne du XV^e siècle à 1570.

La bibliothèque Peabody inclut de nombreux ouvrages classiques dans des éditions anciennes, ainsi que des fonds scientifiques, médicaux et archéologiques. Il y a aussi un guide des manuscrits italiens.

Parmi les documents anglais se trouvent un manuscrit enluminé de la Magna Carta cum statutis, probablement commandée par Philippa de Hainault pour Édouard III à l’occasion de leur mariage en 1326 ; une copie de la première édition du premier traité juridique en anglais, Littleton’s Tenures (1482), et deux copies de la première collection imprimée des statuts anglais (1485).

La Deeds Collection de la Harvard Law School Library est un corpus riche varié de plus de 1000 documents juridiques anglais, entre 1170 environ et 1888. La Manor Rolls collection comprend 170 rouleaux de parchemin de divers types (court-rolls, account-rolls, and others) provenant de manoirs variés, entre 1305 et 1770. La collection de coutumes françaises contient près de 900 éditions imprimées entre 1453 et la Révolution.

La bibliothèque comprend aussi une collection de 30000 actes administratifs français, incluant des édits, des ordonnances, des arrêts, des règlements, etc., sur une grande variété de thèmes : droit de la presse, guildes, vin et production viticole, poids et mesures, commerce, etc. La plupart de ces sources date du XVIII^e.

Les manuscrits de Princeton s’étendent sur une période allant du VIII^e au XVI^e. Bien que les textes latins prédominent, la bibliothèque possède d’excellents fonds de manuscrits grecs byzantins et post-byzantins et de manuscrits vernaculaires en moyen anglais, français, italien, espagnol, allemand et flamand. Environ 150 manuscrits sont enluminés, regroupant à peu près 1750 miniatures, initiales historiées et autres exemples significatifs d’images manuscrites. Des versions numérisées complètes du Garrett MS. 125 (Chrétien de Troyes) et du Garrett MS. 158 (Giovanni Marcanova) sont disponibles en ligne, avec une description et une bibliographie à jour.

Princeton abrite aussi la Scheide Library, une bibliothèque de recherche privée qui abrite encore plusieurs centaines de livres rares et de manuscrits.

La collection de la Columbia comprend environ 2150 papyrus et plus de 3600 ostraca en grec, latin, égyptien (démotique, copte et hiératique) et arabe. Les papyrus vont du III^e avant J.-C. au VII^e siècle de notre ère et proviennent de différentes parties de l’Égypte. Nombre d’entre eux sont visibles en ligne, ici.

L’université de Columbia University abrite aussi le Digital Scriptorium), comprenant des manuscrits numérisés en provenance de tous les États-Unis. Il contient pour l’instant 5300 manuscrits et 24300 images, mais continue de s’agrandir. Digital Scriptorium retournera à l’Université de Californie, Berkeley, en 2011 (digital-scriptorium.org).

La Witchraft Collection contient de nombreux textes datant de la période où la théorie de la sorcellerie comme hérésie a été formulée, y compris 14 éditions latin du Malleus maleficarum, qui a codifié le dogme de l’Eglise en la matière. 4 des éditions ont été imprimées au XV^e, et en particulier la première édition, imprimée avant avril 1487.

Les fragments de la Genizah du Caire contiennent des informations précieuses concernant la vie sociale, culturelle, religieuse et économique des Juifs méditerranéens du IX^e au XIX^e siècle. Les fragments ont été numérisés et sont disponibles en ligne par le biais du Friedberg Genizah Project. The incunabula range from the 1460 Catholicon to Schedel’s Liber Chronicarum, and include De Bury’s Philobiblon, Breydenbach’s Peregrinatio in Terram sanctam, Holle’s 1482 printing of Ptolemy’s Cosmographia, and a number of editions of Sacro Bosco’s Sphaera mundi. Works printed by Peter Schöffer, William Caxton, Günter Zainer, and Anton Koberger are represented, as are block books, indulgences, and even several examples of Asian printing which predate the incunabular period.

The Spencer Collection surveys the illustrated word and book bindings of all periods and all countries and cultures, from medieval manuscripts, Japanese scrolls, and Indian miniatures to monuments in Renaissance printing, illustration and binding to contemporary livres d’artistes.

The Pierpont Morgan Library, once the private domain of the financier-collector Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), is now a public research library, a museum, an architectural landmark, and a historic site. The collection is made up primarily of Western manuscripts, with French being the largest single national group, followed by Italian, English, German, and Belgian. The collection also has significant examples of Armenian, Syriac, Coptic, Ethiopian, Arabic, and Persian manuscripts. More than fifty Coptic manuscripts found in Hamouli, Egypt, nearly all of which are in their original bindings, form the oldest and most important group of Sahidic manuscripts from a single provenance, the Monastery of St. Michael at Sôpehes. The Library also possesses a small but choice collection of Islamic and Indian manuscripts and single miniatures.

Thousands of images from the collection are available online.

Most manuscript items have been acquired for their textual or historical significance rather than for illuminations, illustrations, bindings, or other physical characteristics. The Henry Charles Lea Library is dedicated to the history of the Inquisition and the Catholic Church and the Edgar Fahs Smith Memorial Collection focuses on the history of chemistry. Also of particular importance is the Medici-Gondi Archive. It comprises approximately 240 manuscript items and collections within the Lea Library and documents the commercial activities of the Medici and Gondi families of Florence. The University of Pennsylvania also provides online access to the privately held Lawrence J. Schoenberg Collection, which comprises nearly 500 manuscripts.

The John Carter Brown Library holds one of the world’s leading collections of books, maps, and manuscripts relating to the colonial period of the Americas, including several early editions of Columbus’s letters.

The John Carter Brown Library collection is restricted to use by qualified scholars, engaged in productive research, for whom access to the collection is essential for the advancement of their work. The Rare Books and Special Collections library houses manuscripts, dating from the fourteenth to the twentieth centuries. Included are medieval legal documents, papal bulls, books of hours, monumental choir books and philosophical and legal codices.

The Semitics/ICOR research collections include antiquities devoted to ancient writing in its various early manifestations : Sumerian and Akkadian cuneiform tablets and cylinder seals, coins from Syria-Palestine, Coptic ostraka. The collections boast holdings of Egyptian and Coptic papyri, and some 100 manuscripts in Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, Coptic, Ethiopic, Persian, Samaritan, Syriac, and Turkish. There are also some 1,200 Coptic, Syriac, Arabic and Hebrew manuscripts in facsimile (photographs, microfilm, microfiche).

Also of interest are the Order of Malta collections, dating from 1495, and the Clementine Library, the remains of the library of the Albani family dating back to 1473.

The Folger Shakespeare Memorial Library is an independent research facility with about 250,000 volumes on British and European literary, cultural, political, religious, and social history from the 15th through the 18th centuries. The Shakespeare collection encompasses 79 first folios, 186 quartos, 7,000 later editions, hundreds of translations, and a comprehensive collection of secondary sources.

The Folger also holds one of the largest collections of other early English books, with about 55,000 volumes from the period 1475-1700. Among 35,000 rare books from the Continent are 450 incunables, a 2,000-volume Reformation collection, significant holdings in French and Dutch political pamphlets, and a comprehensive collection of 16th-century Italian books. The manuscript collection, which numbers 55,000 and is especially strong in early correspondence and commonplace books, is extended by such microfilm holdings as the states papers domestic from Edward VI through Charles I and the Cecil, Loseley, Harleian, and Lansdowne papers.

History : The Folger opened in 1932 as a gift to the American nation from Henry Clay Folger and his wife Emily Jordan Folger. It is administered by a Board of Governors under the auspices of Amherst College, Henry Folger’s alma mater.
