Medieval studies conducted in Latvia are often ignored by medievalists from outside northern Europe, yet research into the Middle Ages has intensified over the last few decades. There are numerous actors working in the field, but most of them conducted research which is interdisciplinary or focuses on other chronological periods apart from the Middle Ages. In particular, medieval studies are often eclipsed by studies into prehistoric and early modern periods in Latvia, so the presentation of medieval research in these pages had to be selective, highlighting only those initiative and institutions that make a substantial contribution to medieval studies.
